MOZAMBIQUE
Mozambique's national power distribution utility has set up projects worth more than US$460-million with an aim of doubling local power consumption by the year 2020. Marcelino Gildo — a board member of Electricidade de Mocambique (EDM), the national power distribution utility — said plans to double the number of people who are connected to the national power grid were at an advanced stage. Gildo was speaking to delegates at a two-day energy and mining conference. "Currently at least 10 percent of the population have access to electricity from the national power grid and we hope to increase that figure to 20 percent by 2020," Gildo told delegates to the conference. Projects worth more than $460-million, including for rural areas, were at an advanced stage. Gildo added that EDM had several projects awaiting approval which would supply neighbouring countries. Malawi and Tanzania would also be linked to the Mozambican power grid once the projects were approved, said Gildo. Currently Mozambique supplies power to South Africa and Zimbabwe. Sapa
