ZIMBABWE
Zim opposition office raided
Posted Fri, 04 Apr 2008

Zimbabwean police have raided a hotel in the capital Harare being used by the main opposition Movement for Democratic Change, the party's secretary general said on Friday.

"They were at the hotel we have been using as an information centre. They went into the rooms we have been using. I don't know what they were looking for," Tendai Biti told South African radio.

Biti said the raid on Thursday at the prestigious Meikles hotel in the centre of the capital meant President Robert Mugabe and his ruling Zanu-PF party were "preparing for a war" with the opposition over weekend polls.

Still no official result

The MDC claims Tsvangirai won Saturday's presidential vote outright by winning more than 50 percent of the ballot, but six days later there has been no official word from the electoral commission.

Zanu-PF has indicated it is gearing up for a second round run-off to try and win the 84-year-old Mugabe a sixth consecutive term and has called a meeting of its politburo on Friday to prepare its battle plan.

In a separate incident on Thursday, two foreign journalists were arrested for operating without accreditation.
