Troussier to coach Morocco

Former Bafana Bafana coach Philippe Troussier has been confirmed as the coach of Morocco after signing a four-year deal with the Moroccan Football Federation.

Troussier, who coached Japan at the 2002 World Cup, had been negotiating for a long-term deal, which he eventually inked on Saturday night.

The 50-year-old was selected from a list of nine candidates to replace Badou Zaki, who resigned on October 17 after Morocco failed to qualify for the 2006 World Cup finals.

Troussier, who had said he was interested in taking over the vacant post as Republic of Ireland manager, has earned a reputation for turning around the fortunes of modest African sides, earning him the nickname 'the white witch doctor'.

He has also had spells in charge of South Africa, Nigeria, the Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, Qatar and Japan, whom he guided to the second round of the 2002 World Cup.

He took over at French club Marseille last November, but lost his job at the end of the season after the club just missed out on a UEFA Cup place.

Troussier's role now will include qualifying the 'Atlas Lions' for the finals of the 2008 African Nations Cup, and for the 2010 World Cup to be held in South Africa.

He will also be called upon to help the Olympic team in the 2008 Games in Beijing.
