Togo star in hot water

Togolese international striker Emmanuel Adebayor is set to be severely punished by French championship side Monaco after failing to report back for training, it was revealed on Monday.

Adebayor is set to play in the African Nations Cup later this month in Egypt, but was still required by the 2004 Champions League finalists to play against Auxerre on Thursday before leaving for a training camp with his country.

However, Monaco sporting director Jean-Luc Ettori said that there had been no sign of him.

"He should have returned on Monday and then left again after the match on Thursday," said Ettori, a former French international goalkeeper.

"But I have had no news and he is not answering his mobile telephone.

"In my opinion he will not return, despite us trying to fit our plans around him. He will be severely punished."

The Togo squad begin their training camp in Sfax, Tunisia, on Tuesday for the football championships which run from January 20 to February 10.

Togo are in Group B along with African giants Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of Congo and fellow World Cup finalists Angola.
