Cameroon coach quits

Portuguese Artur Jorge on Tuesday announced his resignation as coach of Cameroon in a letter to the country's Sports Minister Philippe Mbarga Mboua.

Cameroon, who failed to qualify for this summer's World Cup in Germany, lost an opportunity to make amends in the Africa Cup of Nations, where they were eliminated after a penalty shoot-out defeat to Ivory Coast in the quarterfinals.

Jorge said, however, that the football federation was in breach of his contract, highlighting that he had not been given a full and free rein in running the team.

"I regret to inform you of my resignation as of today, and that I wish to put an end to our contract," Jorge in the letter.

"As I am sure you are aware, article two of my contract has been breached on several occasions. Nevertheless, I do not want to use that as an excuse to cause a dispute."

Article two of Jorge's contract stipulated that the Portuguese was responsible for choosing the team, keeping tabs on players, scouting and organising training camps and friendly matches.

However, since his arrival Jorge has on several occasions complained of not being allowed to carry out those tasks.

Jorge had also complained that his salary was frequently not paid on time.

However he added: "I had a great time with the team and the coaching staff, who I feel were very professional in their approach.

"I wish Cameroon and its national team all the success it deserves in the future, and I sincerely hope Cameroon will be the first African team to win a major title at world level."

The 60-year-old Jorge, a former coach of FC Porto and Paris St Germain, was named Cameroon coach in January 2005 with the task of helping them qualify for the World Cup which takes place June 9-July 9.

An anonymous government official claimed to AFP they were aware that Jorge was already looking for a job elsewhere: "We're not surprised by his resignation, because we already know that Artur Jorge has been on contact with potential employers in South America and Asia".
